Once upon a time...

The Utopie Vocal Ensemble has constantly evolved since its creation in 2000 by Gonzague Monney (director) and Sylvain Rudaz (president). The group has ranged between 16 and 45 amateur singers. Based near Romont (Fribourg, Switzerland), the ensemble is currently made up of about 30 members.

The choir’s distinctiveness is a result of the diversity of its repertoire and its enthusiasm. To date, the choir has organised two comedy shows combining singing and theatre, two series of sacred music concerts bringing together several choirs and a brass band, as well as numerous performances throughout western Switzerland.

In autumn 2008, Utopie was awarded the public’s prize for its performance of “Gegrüsset seist Du, Maria”, composed and conducted by Gonzague Monney, at the composition competition organised by “Espace 2” radio together with the French-speaking Swiss Choir Federations. This piece was also awarded 2nd prize by the jury.

Its director and founder being abroad, Utopie was then conducted by Fabien Volery and had the honour of winning two prizes at the singing contest in Fribourg (Switzerland) in May 2009.

The Utopie Vocal Ensemble’s aim is to introduce its singers to all types of music. To this effect, each year is marked by a specific and substantial project such as the release of Utopie’s first eponymous CD in 2007.

Since autumn 2009, the Utopie Vocal Ensemble has once again been under the direction of Gonzague Monney.
